This past January 14st Lukas Liquor Superstore nosed and tasted many different barrel samples and finally selected one that was deemed perfect and worthy of our 23rd hand-selected Buffalo Trace KSBW Single Barrel Release.

January 14, 2013 Lukas Liquor Superstore Tasting Notes
For Barrel Sample #099
Nose: Classic rich caramel kettle corn sugar meets polished oak furniture. Nice amount of rye interlaced with fresh aged-wood barrel shavings. Rustic & hearty. With a dab of water the vanilla & caramel notes slowly emerge. Now the corn & rye seem to fluctuate in a playful way. A shape shifting of aromas so to speak.
Taste: Definitely the rye is way more dominate while the corn sweet seems to take a backseat without much of a fight. Rich oaky tannins with spiced caramel. Then there is a discovery of an almost minty flavor & cooling effect here, this has to be the rye grain at work. Oddly enough this is the first in all of my Buffalo Trace Barrel Samples that I have encountered this and it is openly welcomed. The minty notes seem to work just fine with the spiced caramel. Hints of honey heated on an oak stave.
Finish: Long, smooth, warming and dry. The dry rye earthiness & oak lingers with some vanilla and spice. It has been awhile since I have experienced a dryer finish of Buffalo Trace but I like where this is going. The rye has made an impact on this barrel but in a positive way. This particular barrel will be great on the rocks or make a perfect Manhattan to offset the sweet vermouth and cherries. Very eager to get a bottle.
Note: This is the last time that Lukas’ Buffalo Trace single barrel’s will be selected exclusively by Lukas Liquor Superstore. All barrel’s from now on will selected by the newly formed Lukas Barrel Committee, which is intended to bring our staff and customers together in searching out fantastic whiskey’s.
