New Spirits Release at Lukas Liquor Superstore
Clyde May’s “Alabama Style” Whiskey
Over 70 years ago, in an illegal still tucked away in the Conecuh Ridge in Alabama, Clyde May created his first batch of craft whiskey. Every Christmas, Clyde gave away unmarked bottles of his illegal amber nectar to lucky locals. There still remain folk with a few carefully tucked away.
Clyde eventually paid the price for his passion—eight months in federal penitentiary. But that didn’t stop him from setting up a new still the day he was released.
Clyde May lived outside the law and the bourbon belt. He was a moonshiner by trade but a craftsman by heart. Using copper stills, fresh Alabama spring water and the finest local grains, he vowed to make the best darn whiskey Alabama had ever tasted. While others sold their moonshine straight, he aged small batches in charred oak barrels and experimented until he created his own unique finish—Alabama Style.
Alabama Style Whiskey
Clyde added oven-dried apples to his barrels. The resulting hints of green apple and cinnamon not only made it smoother than other whiskeys—they’re what made it Alabama Style.
Today, we honor Clyde’s legacy with a blend of 5 & 6 year old bourbon, handcrafted in small batches and finished in that Alabama Style.
