I recently had the pleasure to make my way down to Kentucky to choose a couple of barrels at Four Roses! The trip was amazing, I learned a whole lot and got to try some awesome bourbon along the way.
When I arrived at Four Roses it started snowing pretty hard. Notice their rickhouses are only 1 floor compared to the normal 4+
Grabbing a taste straight from the barrel! These barrels were being dumped to be used for four Roses Yellow Label.
Other barrels in queue to be dumped/moved
Bottling line. When I was there they were bottling Four Roses Single Barrel. Still mostly done by hand, except filling.
Another barrel being dumped for bottling. Don’t worry, the black stuff is just barrel char.
Using the whiskey thief to pull samples from the barrels
The barrel tasting was done completely blind to avoid any biases of age and/or recipe.
Hammering the bung back on to one of my chosen barrels
Dan Gardner from Four Roses and myself with the two barrels I chose. We will get a cask strength OBSF recipe (“B” high rye mashbill and “F” yeast, herbal) aged 8yr 3mo. This was actually the youngest barrel of the bunch and it was damn tasty! Our second barrel will be a 100 proof OBSV recipie. Also damn tasty!
